The most exciting thing about computers is that they can perform so many different functions. In the early days of computing - way back in the ‘80s - they reckoned computers would control nuclear power stations. How right they were!
It’s all done with software and there are software applications for every purpose you can think of - and thousands you probably never thought existed!
Essential Applications
There is a core set of applications that most people need and use - a word processor, spreadsheet, internet browser, email and, along with our use of the internet, the obligatory antivirus, malware and firewall software.
Creative software is also an essential for many people, whether it’s Music Software enabling you to create your own songs and music, graphics software to help you enhance your photos, or video software to help you make the most of your home movies and even create professional films.
Many people enjoy tinkering with their computer set up and there are many tune-up and analytic utilities to help. Not only can you change the look of your desktop, but you can customize many aspects of your computer’s operation.
And where would businesses be without software? From word processors to spreadsheets, databases, presentation software and communication packages - they all help keep the show on the road!
Computer Games are on most people’s short list and recent developments in sounds and graphics make then a truly stunning experience. Online multi-user games combine the excitement of games with a fantasy universe and the ability to interact with other players - all from the comfort of your own computer.
What You Need To Run Your Software
When buying software you need to check several things. First, will it run on your current Operating System? Many pieces of Windows software will run on XP, Vista and Windows 7 but some will not run on XP and Vista software may require an update in order to run under Windows 7.
Mac Software, too, often need a specific version of the OS in order to run so this must be checked before buying.
The second thing to check is the system specifications the software requires. Most fairly modern computers will run most current software. However, software which performs heavy processing such as graphics and Video Editing may have a set of minimum hardware requirements such as so-much RAM and a processor of a certain speed.
But take these specs with a pinch of salt as they are usually the minimum required to run the software. That could mean it simply crawls along. You can’t go wrong by adding more RAM to your system but you also need to make sure your CPU has enough grunt to do the job. It may be fine for browsing and handling emails but older processors may struggle with the demand of modern processor-intensive software.
Software For Everything!
If you tend to use a core set of software programs, take a look around at the plethora of other applications. You might be amazed at how many niche areas people have developed software for. Whatever your interest, whether it be a hobby or professional, there will almost certainly be several pieces of software designed to help you enjoy your hobby more or make some aspect of your life easier, more efficient or just plain fun!
